Golda Meir House

In 1913, Golda Meir moved in with her older sister on 1606 Julian St. Later in life Golda Meir served as the Prime Minister of Israel from 1969-1974. Despite its significance, the Golda Meir House was nearly demolished in 1981. Mel and Esther Cohen led an intense effort to save the house, which included sleeping on the floor one night to protect it from vandalism. The Cohens formed the Golda Meir Memorial Association and helped moved the house in 1983 to protect it from a redevelopment on the site. Finally in 1988, the Golda Meir house found a permanent home on the Auraria Campus of the Metropolitan State University of Denver. Seven years later, the Golda Meir House was designated a Denver landmark and the Colorado Historical Fund financed a complete restoration.Today, the building today serves as a museum, conference center, and the Golda Meir Center for Political Leadership, a program of MSU Denver.
